An Interview With Gangster Michael Magnafichi
Posted on 09. Apr, 2011 by Joseph Fosco in Organized Crime
In recent days I had the rare opportunity of interviewing a purported ‘made’ member of the Chicago Outfit, although, I did not ask him to confirm his ‘made’ status as a Chicago gangster. His name is Michael G. Magnafichi. From what I understand, Michael has been retired from the Outfit for at least 10-years.
Please understand that every single declaration, accusation and insinuation made against others in this interview are merely allegations and should not be considered as facts until proven in a court of law. Thank you.
JF: Good afternoon, Michael.
MM: Good afternoon, Joseph.
JF: I think starting at the beginning would make sense. Where did it all begin?
MM: Jack Cerone the old man, not his stupid son the lawyer, made arrangements with my father, who worked for Jack, to have me drive him around. I was a teenager.
JF: How old are you now?
MM: I will be 50.
JF: How long did that gig with Outfit boss, Jack Cerone last?
MM: Until the old man went away to prison in 1985 or ’86.
JF: What else were you doing in those days?
MM: I was a bookmaker for my father and his friends.
JF: Who was your dad?
MM: Lee Magnafichi
JF: You seemed to inspire your father and his friends with your ability to golf.
MM: You could say that.
JF: You lost your father a while ago.
MM: My dad died of lung Cancer. He died right before New Year’s Eve in 1989.
JF: Just in time for the New Year. That is especially sad. I am sorry.
MM: Joseph, it was a long time ago. Jack the lawyer insisted that I spend New Year’s Eve with him at Brookwood Country Club. I was insulted that he would be as inconsiderate about the loss of my father to suggest that I join him at a party.
JF: You are referring to the gangster’s son, Jack the lawyer.
MM: Yes.
JF: Did you accept Jack’s party invitation?
MM: F*** no!
JF: There were certain bonds between you and the Cerones?
MM: I was his father’s eyes and ears for seven or eight years prior to his incarceration, and for another 10-years after his incarceration. I visited Jack in prison almost every month.
JF: You must have known him very well.
MM: I knew Jack better than anyone.
JF: I know.
From this point forward, I am going to refer to your late friend Jack Cerone as Jack. His son, the lawyer, will be referred to as “The Kid.” And if we talk about the lawyer’s adopted son, I will refer to him as “The Grandkid” or “The Kid’s Son.” I point out that The Grandkid is adopted because an additional son from that generation emerged nearly 14-years ago, who happens to be The Kid’s illegitimate son.
MM: Okay, right.
JF: What was your father’s relationship like with Jack?
MM: My father was Jack’s most loyal guy. Johnny was like a politician, who knew how to work Jack. Joe did not like Jack. Willie tolerated Jack, however, reported to Joey O on Jack’s behavior relating to his drinking.
JF: I just want to clarify the names that you mentioned. Johnny would be Outfit boss, John DiFronzo. Joe would be Outfit boss, Joe Andriacchi. Willie would be Outfit member, Willie Messino. And Joey O would be Outfit boss, Joey Aiuppa, a.k.a., Joey O’Brien. What about Rudy Fratto?
MM: There were others in Jack’s crew. I will get to them later if I get to them at all.
JF: Jack had a propensity to bed other men’s wives; men that he was close with. Do you mind telling us whose wives he “allegedly” slept with?
MM: Multi-millionaire, Harold Fushman, Gene “Lefty” Cacciatore, Rocky Infelise and others that I would rather keep quiet.
JF: To me it seems as an awful abuse of power. However, I suppose it is relevant considering the source. I would briefly point out that Harold was an auto parts mogul. Lefty and Rocky were gangsters. Jack sure was an interesting person.
MM: Hey, Joseph, go easy on my pal! (Laughter)
JF: I am going to turn it up a little bit, but in a different direction. I would like to talk about the infamous Spilotros. Did you know them?
MM: Yes. I knew Michael better than I knew Tony. But I knew both of them. And I met Doc Spilotro through you a couple of years ago when he attempted to bribe me to inform on Johnny, which I obviously never did, otherwise Johnny would be under indictment right now.
JF: Right.
To clarify, you mean Johnny DiFronzo. Some suggest that he is an informant himself. What do you think?
MM: Yes, I was talking about Johnny DiFronzo. And I would think that he could very well be an informant. I do not know how else to understand that he was not indicted after the Family Secrets trial. His name came up in the trial as being at the murder scene.
JF: Was Johnny at the murder scene?
MM: I will not answer that on record.
JF: Okay.
MM: Can we talk more about Jack?
JF: Did you assume Jack’s role as it related to sleeping with other men’s wives or significant others?
MM: I know where you are going with this. Yes. I slept with Michael Spilotro’s wife. Former Elmwood Park Police Officer, Ron “Pooch” Puccillo’s wife and Billy Daddono’s ex-girlfriend, prior to his first marriage. Then Billy fooled around with my wife, which evened the score. (Laughter)
JF: I want to clarify that you are referring to Outfit associate, William Daddono III. Tell me about the affair with Pooch’s wife.
MM: She was an animal. I was in my early 20s. Jack confronted me on it. He told me that “Pooch is crying to everyone that you are f***ing his wife. He is a cop and you cannot do that to a cop’s wife.” I told Jack okay, I would never do it again. A minute later, Jack asked me if she is really an animal in bed. I told him that she was. Then Jack told me to “f*** her one more time.”
JF: I hope Pooch has better luck with Jimmy Cerone’s ex.
Would you confirm that you were in a decade long affair with Dickie Parrillo’s daughter Barbara McCarthy? I believe Dickie is the brother of two of the new owners of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. And, I believe Pooch is the Elmwood Park cop that Outfit Capo Joe Lombardo had hospitalized many years ago, due to a severe beating inflicted upon him.
MM: I will not discuss the situation with Barbara on record. Could we talk about someone like former State of Illinois Senator, Jimmy DeLeo, instead?
JF: Okay. We will get to Jimmy another time.
I want to get back on the Spilotros. What do you know about the hit that took their lives?
MM: It took place at my Uncle Jimmy’s house. My dad arranged the location for the murders.
JF: I know that I agreed not to ask you about details before beginning this interview, so I will not push my luck.
I would like to ask you about Rudy Fratto. Do you respect him?
MM: No.
JF: Why not?
MM: He is a lying, bragging, fake-o f***. He has owed me money for over a decade. I lent him money after Johnny turned him down on a loan. He knows I could use the money now. He never paid me a penny while he was making all that money he got in trouble for making.
JF: I know Rudy is a real gangster. What about him do you consider fake?
MM: He was never a boss. It was my father that caved in to Rudy’s mother, Dottie, who constantly advocated for her son, wanting him to be a gangster. He proved himself worthy, somehow, to my father and Jack.
JF: I understand that I cannot ask you how Rudy proved himself worthy.
MM: No.
JF: Let us talk about Outfit bookmaker, Marco D’Amico.
MM: Joe, you know better. The only people that I will not talk about with you on the record are Marco and Joey A.
JF: Right. I am sorry. Could I just ask if Joey A likes Marco? I am referring to Joe Andriacchi.
MM: You know that Joe cannot stand Marco. I feel bad that Joe does not like Marco. I love Marco. And, I love Solly, and I will not talk about Solly D on record either, so do not even bother asking about him.
JF: I want to clarify that you are referring to Outfit member, Solly DeLaurentis.
I suppose that leaves us with the DiFronzos. How close are you with them?
MM: If I see them its hello and goodbye. Back in the days when Johnny was a man, we were much closer. Now he goes around pretending that he is a regular person. His brother Pete is Johnny’s closest friend. Their brother Joe is back in the fold after being out of the loop over his narcotic case.
JF: You are in financial trouble. How did that happen?
MM: The Outfit dried up on me. It did not dry up for everyone, but it dried up on me. I mismanaged my office because of personal troubles, one thing after another failed for me. The Hatch f***ed me out of a lot of money. I began borrowing a lot of money and I was stuck in a hole that I have been unable to get out of. You know how it is. Look at how the Outfit nearly financially destroyed you and some of your family members, and you were not a gangster. You were just an unsuspecting sucker that was eaten up by a bunch of sharks.
JF: Michael, I am the one giving the interview. When you start your own news forum, you could interview me. Until then, I will lead the discussion. (Laughter)
MM: (Laughter) Okay, sorry.
JF: I would briefly clarify that The Hatch is a late Outfit henchman, Tony Chiaramonti. And, by the way, Michael, I do miss the days when I could help people, financially.
What is your relationship like with Joe Andriacchi these days?
MM: Joe became my second father when my dad died. We were best friends. Unfortunately, over the last seven or eight years, we fell apart. It was over money. When I fell on my ass, I was unable to maintain my responsibilities with Joe. Instead of coming clean with him, I chose to lie. I ruined the trust between us and insulted him at the same time. This is one of my biggest regrets. Joe is a good man and I love him with all of my heart.
JF: (Hands Michael a tissue)
MM: I don’t want this stupid Kleenex.
JF: I understand. However, Michael, I think your fall from grace with the Outfit and from people like the DiFronzos and Andriacchi was truly a blessing. God works in mysterious ways. You have more important reasons to live your life.
MM: I hope you are right. In a big way, I am happy to be detached from the Outfit. I would like to focus on golf again. It is just so hard to concentrate on playing good when financial issues are on my mind. Here, I am going on 50 and I do not have a job history other than being a bookmaker and a golfer. I realize that bookmaking is out. I would not mind being a golf pro or instructor at a club, somewhere in a warmer climate.
JF: Michael, I would like to refocus on the Outfit. You had a surrogate uncle named Rich Penachio. I know the FBI visited you more than once about the night of his death. Who was with him that night?
MM: I will not discuss this on the record.
JF: Very well.
Michael, I am going to suggest that we stop here. If it is okay with you, I would like to give my readers an opportunity to ask you some questions via the comment thread, which we could address in a follow up interview in a week or two. I think we established enough to get a good community conversation started. How is that?
MM: Sure.
JF: Michael, thank you.
MM: I will look forward to the follow up, if I am still alive. (Laughter)
JF: You will be alive. I am beginning to wonder if the only set of testicles that DiFronzo possesses are the synthetic ones hanging from the trailer-hitch of his ugly pickup truck, which is obviously an example of his creepy sense of humor.
MM: Creepy, very creepy.
JF: Indeed
