Sadly, but not entirely unexpectedly, Conrad Black has run into interference from the government concerning his recent bail plea. Federal prosecutors simply refuse to admit that they have done anything wrong in the Black case, though the harsh chastisement by the Supreme Court would seemingly require them to do so. Here I have reprinted Conrad Black’s reply to the government’s argument against bail. The facts of the case, which were beautifully rendered in the initial bail plea, are echoed in this newest communication to the 7th circuit.
Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, who in her former capacity as solicitor-general once represented the U.S. government in the Black appeal, has praised Black’s lawyer, Miguel Estrada, saying he is worthy of sitting on the Supreme Court. Hopefully, with an attorney of this caliber representing him, Conrad Black’s case will be taken seriously by The Honorable Richard Posner.
