Yesterday morning I was having breakfast at one of my favorite little eateries, sitting at the counter wondering if my coffee was going to be fresh. All of a sudden I overheard the two elderly men next to me discussing the recent natural catastrophe in Japan. I believe the two men were World War II vets. One of them was explaining his disappointment in his grandson’s decision to peruse the internet in search of charitable organizations that are helping Japan with their recent tragedy.
The grandfather began reflecting on the incredible damage to the men and materiel of the United States by the Empire of Japan. There were scores of ships and submarines sunk. The cost in human life was even more catastrophic. Thousands of enlisted men and innocent civilians met their deaths that infamous day in Pearl Harbor. In the campaigns that would stretch over the next several years roughly 100,000 men would die fighting the Japanese.
