The African Union (AU) and the Arab League (AL) seem to be at odds as to what they ‘suggest’ the rest of the world does about the wholesale slaughter being perpetrated upon the citizens of Libya by the homicidal maniac Muammar Gaddafi and his spoiled, despotic sons. While the Arab League believes a “no-fly” zone should be set up in Libya to keep Gaddafi from using his Soviet-era fighter jets to murder his people, the African Union staunchly rejects the idea that any western nation might interfere in the Libyan Civil War. Apparently the only people in the world that can (or, perhaps, would even be interested in) setting up such a zone are western nations. The Arab League probably wants to hold on to all their fighter jets in case they need to murder some of their own civilians in the coming weeks.

As for the AU, it isn’t all that shocking that they do not want western interference in their civil wars. Most of the continent is ruled by tin pot military dictators and political strongmen who routinely conduct business much along the lines of Gaddafi. They probably see the current mess in Libya as a regrettable, but necessary, housecleaning. Because of this, I doubt anyone in the West that actually wants to help the Libyans will take the ruling of the AU seriously. Africa’s abysmal record on human rights gives them little moral high ground.
