Jesse Jackson Jr., absentee congressman that won his spot in the U.S. House of Representatives back without even campaigning for it, has resigned his seat, thus ending another chapter in the Chicago Machine’s greedy, back-stabbing, money-grubbing story of political domination. This caps (for now) a political career that can only be considered remarkable because of its political unremarkableness. Few politicians have been so adroit at not answering questions or taking stands on behalf of their constituents. Instead Jackson’s utterly wasted time in Washington D.C. was an endless parade of self-aggrandizement, larcenous dishonesty and utter disregard for the sanctity of the office.
The Chicago Machine apparatchiks must be proud.
Upon his election to the House, Jackson had the gall to say the following:
“I too have a dream…that one day the South Side of Chicago and the south suburbs will look like the North Side of Chicago and the northwest suburbs.”
While I am not shocked at his theft of King’s famous line (Junior, like his old man, is an accomplished thief and swindler), Jesse’s obviously insincere statement about uplifting the poor neighborhoods that have supported his lavish lifestyle makes me sick to my stomach.
During his decade and a half reign of incompetence, what has Jackson done to help his constituents?
Nothing. Absolutely, positively nothing.
Chicago’s South Side has degenerated into a war zone under his watch. It is safer to be a U.S. solider in the heart of the battle against the Taliban than it is to be a kid in Englewood. How could someone as powerful and influential as a congressman and scion of one of the African-American community’s most prominent political families have done nothing to stem the slaughter carried out daily in Chicago’s poorest (and blackest) neighborhoods?
