An Attack On NASA Is An Attack On American Innovation

The vast network of satellites that orbit the earth that give us access to near instantaneous communication across the world and pin-point GPS technology would not have been possible without NASA. Lifeshears (Jaws of Life™), grooved runways, breast cancer screening, electrolyte concentrates, fish tracking systems, diving suits, coolant suits, aerogels, water and urine sanitation and processing, de-icing solution, gas analyzers, waterless sanitizer, hydrogen sensors, lightning detection systems, artificial muscle kits, ultra durable piston-based motors, contact lenses, invisible braces, smoke masks, temper foam, scratch-resistant lenses, ear thermometers, shoe insoles, adjustable smoke detectors, cordless tools are just a few of the inventions that NASA contributed to in some substantial way.

I would implore the Obama administration and the American public to not dismiss NASA because it appears to serve a purpose unnecessary to everyday life in America. There are few ways the government can so readily encourage the private sector to create the next great leap forward in technology, thus assuring United States’ continued leadership in the world today. We should be looking for every spare dollar we can to encourage the lofty aspirations of NASA, and, by extension, America.
